Sun is setting on in this seemingly quiet and remote historical restaurant, Pont Breaux in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, USA; yet don’t be fooled, for this place filled up just minutes after the band began to play. Forest Huval and Friends won over the crowd on a sultry Sunday in October so definitely look for more nights like this! This band received accolades from local and out of town fans in search of original “melting pot” of excellent gumbo, and music.

Unique to Cajun music, is how a singer’s individual voice can interpret and evolve a song, which is rooted in themes which were about the lives the Cajun people. Forests’ vocal interpretation bristled with gutsy soul and pure imagery while Al Berard’s lush laden fiddling was reminiscent of one encore after another. Along with Forest Huval on Accordion and vocals, this impressively line-up included Al Berard on fiddle, the compelling Keith Blanchard on drums and Dwayne Brasseaux playing seamless guitar.

Forest Huval and Al Berard will be playing at the Bayou n’ Brooklyn Music Festival which is happening at Jalopy Music Theater in Red Hook, May 11th,12 and 13, 2012.
“It’s amazing how fast the days fly by! It sure beats working!”

Folks found Riverfolk Festival Jam Camp a perfect starting place for beginners as well as seasoned musicians.
You can still hear the music and magical sounds of Bob Black & his Bluegrass Boys united with Cajun music’s Al Berard & Friends, in a impromptu recorded live just after lunch on our second day as soundtrack to an inclusive jamcamp slideshow arranged with Cajun song “Danse Bébé Creole”.

At Riverfolk we were exposed to wide array of classes staffed by guest artists in residence for a short week packed with jam sessions, dancing, and festival performances, both indoors and out. Cajun Musician and composer, Al Berard lead fiddle and jam workshops while Adrian Huval boosted the confidence of our Accordion players and percussionist Keith Blanchard kept the beat. Keith Yoder, Andrew Hatfield, and David Mosher gave bold Bluegrass workshops leading to powerful ‘end of session’ outdoor concert. Our guest musician and teacher, Bob Black owning bluegrass musical roots going straight back to Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass Music” was a musical treat worth the trip to beautiful Midwest countryside.

Riverfolk’s work extends deep into the communities of both Manchester, Michigan and New Orleans, Louisiana, by sponsoring a Hurricane Katrina Relief Concert raising funds for the American Red Cross released “Riverfolk Festival Live” CD, with proceeds benefiting Hurricane Katrina relief and co-sponsoring a concert at The Ark which raised moneys for New Orleans Tipitina’s Musicians’ Foundation. Close to home Riverfolk has sponsored artists from the migrant community at DuRussell Potato Farms, donated to Village Parks, Carr Park Playground Project, grants Young Artist Scholarships to High School students, and sponsors art workshops for children.

Riverfolk Music & Arts Association announces Riverfolk Festival 2012 on August 1-4

If you were lucky enough to get intimate and find Jesse Lege Live, dance to his catchy riffs this past weekend at Two Boots Brooklyn, NY, you’d have caught a long-awaited collaboration by three fantastic women and two Brooklyn resident players. The formula? Erica Weiss, Evelyn Schneider, and Missy Roser with guest appearances by Thomas Bryan Eaton and Raphael McGregor on Lap Steel Guitar. Missy hailed the boldest, most captivating fiddle solos, while Erica’s harmony infused voice and guitar and the lustrous yet easy goin beat of Evelyn Schneider on bass brings brought out the best in all. In addition, Laren Droll added his rootsy – zydeco flair in the middle of the night keeping everyone on their feet.
